How Speed Impacts Fuel Costs

High Speeds = Higher Fuel Costs

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, fuel consumption increases almost 2% for each mile per hour above 50 mph, this is how high speed impacts fuel costs. While you don’t expect your drivers to stay below 50 mph on the interstate, you can prevent costly fuel consumption by eliminating excessive speeding.

Most drivers have the tendancy to speed 5 or 10 mph over the posted speed limit and are not likely to recieve a traffic citation for it. Monitoring drivers’ speed versus the posted road speeds can reduce fuel costs by as much as 14%.

As you can see below, fuel consumption increases exponentioally at higher speeds. If you could enforce a max speed policy of 70 mph, you could reduce fuel consumption by 11%.

Long Idling = High Fuel Loss

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, running a vehicle at idle speed dramatically reduces engine life. One hour of idle time is equal to using one gallon of gas. Excessive idling can waste up to 800 gallons of fuel annually for the average truck.
